Sand und Stöcker, Dimensionen variabel

Bevor der Viktoriapark in Berlin-Kreuzberg öffentlich zugänglich war, diente er als Exerzierplatz für Soldaten. Der dabei aufwirbelnde Sandstaub rief soviel Unmut der Anlieger*innen vor, dass er das Militär zum Verkauf des Geländes an die Stadt zwang. Heute wird diese Historie des bürgerlichen Widerstands von Schinkels Nationaldenkmal für die Befreiungskriege überschattet. Zum Tag des offenen Denkmals erinnere ich an das pazifistische Medium und mache das Fundament des Hügels sichtbar: Ich verteile Unmengen an Sand an die Besucher*innen des Parks und so entstehen temporäre Architekturen entlang des Wasserfalls. Statt Gusseisen, Felsbrocken und Beherrschung der Natur wird der Gestaltungsdrang mit Sand, Stöcken als Teil-der-Natur ausgelebt! Heute darf jeder ein Schinkel sein!

Installation in public space

Sand and sticks, dimensions variable

In the late 19th century, before Viktoriapark in Berlin-Kreuzberg was open to the public, it served as a parade ground for soldiers. The resulting sand dust caused so much resentment among local residents that it forced the military to sell the land. Today, this history of civic resistance is overshadowed by Schinkel's National Monument to the Wars of Liberation. For Open Monument Day, I'm commemorating the pacifist medium sand and making the foundation of the hill visible: I'm distributing vast quantities of sand to park visitors, and together we created around temporary architectures along the waterfall. Instead of cast iron, boulders, and the domination of nature, the urge to create is expressed with sand and sticks as part of nature itself! Today, everyone can be a Schinkel!
